Happy Monday!
Since I have been home recovering from sprained back muscles I have had some time on my hands. At first I was really frustrated and freaked out but when I finally gave in and accepted my fate I started to see the positive side of this temporary yet painful set back.
It got me wondering …what could be so great about having a setback?
So I am asking you for your musing today …
What do You think could be so great about experiencing a personal and professional setback?
I have three to get the ball rolling;
Having time to ponder
When you are running around, chasing down your to do’s you don’t spend a lot of time on the big picture. Experiencing a setback allows you time to step back and re-evaluate your situation and strategies.
You have the opportunity to appreciate what really IS working in your life
Experiencing a temporary setback allows you to be aware of all that you do have that makes life worth living. You begin to acknowledge what is working and take the time to feel good about what you are doing well.
Allows you to make necessary changes you have been putting off
Being forced into a time out doesn’t feel good but it does give you a chance to stop and re-evaluate your choices and see what is not really working. When you are busy you are so focusing on doing you loose touch with WHY you are taking action in the first place. Sometime your WHY is spot on but your How is way off course. Getting stopped mid-stream allows you to review and correct your actions.

Ps. Let’s always keep in mind that a setback is really just a setup for a comeback.

You yourself make the most important point at the top, Kim, when you identify that a setback is the opportunity for a comeback…or in other words, an opportunity to engage in resilience. Resilience is the most critical character trait or discipline one can have; it is the key to any kind of success in life and realizing that one is resilient is a huge confidence builder. Excelsior!
Hi There this is Kim,
I love ALL your thoughts and shares. Each of you have something wonderfully unique to say about set backs. Thank you. I am experiencing the lesson of this one and enjoying the time to refresh.
What has been the biggest setback in your personal/professional career? How to did you begin to make your comeback?
This is so important because each of you are inspirational to others and so many people feel like they are experiencing a set back. What if we could inspire the world to see a set back like we do…what could we inspire in the world????

I would love your opinion on this…RT @successgenie12: What is so great about a setback? http://bit.ly/bVNluh
A setback gives one time to think and reflect on being grateful for everything we have to enjoy and nurture around us. Also it may be a sign that we need rest because our body has stopped even for a brief moment to let us know to take a break from the busy lives we lead.
Great ques Kim.
Ahh set backs; “the universes guidance system around landmines!” Everything happens for a reason is not just a cliche’ and when you learn to be calm and solutions focused you find lessons and opportunities.
I have learned to say thank you for my challenges and setbacks.
Thanks Kim

A setback does allow you to think about what should you do next? When I was laid off about 6 yrs. ago, I asked myself “what do I do now? I discovered that entrepreneurship was my passion and I found different opportunities to be involved in and also changed my career from training and development to recruiting. Setbacks happen for a reason and it provides you a time to retool yourself.
What you are saying Kim, is that a set back to do nothing, gives you “think” time. Something that we seldon make time to have. It forces us to do something for ourselves, such as either rest the body, rest the soul and maybe even rest our mind. It’s like going into a time capsule, and when we emerge we are completely refreshed, able to look at life in a different prespective and able to take on the world. Or maybe, we just decided that it is better, not to take on the world and to just enjoy life more and smell more roses. Whatever it may be, it will be for the better, because we seldom have “time out” That’s why parents give children a “time out” so that they may have time to relect.
One of the rules of being human is “lessons are repeated until learned.” when something “adverse” happens, I think about whether or not I’ve experienced this situation before, and/or what lesson am I supposed to learn before I can move forward on my journey.
